Project 2: Mark-making materials

“Build up a variety of surfaces using whatever comes to hand that has two differently coloured layers.”

Exploring different materials and how they work together is always interesting. I spent some time experimenting with materials.

The following are examples of different combinations:

  1. Red pastel, charcoal and eraser
  2. Pan pastel, oil pastel with red chalk pastel, then marks with a knife blade
  3. Acrylic paint, white oil pastel, marks with a bamboo pen and scalpel
  4. Tin foil, candle wax, charcoal then acrylic paint scraped back
  5. Tin foil, acrylic paint, candle wax, scraped back with bamboo
  6. Muslim on watercolour, watercolour, watercolour pencils, end of bamboo pen
  7. Liquidex spray paint onto dry paper, marks made when paint was wet, used thick end of bamboo stick to drag the paint from the blue, on wax paper
  8. Spray paint on wet paper, sponge dragged across when wet
  9. Spray paint on wet paper, spray paint over water-soluble crayon
  10. Charcoal, spray paint onto wet surface, watercolour oil pastels, acrylic paint
